Oakley is a quaint and pleasant village in the borough of Basingstoke and Deane in Hampshire, England. The village is just over 4 miles away from the centre of Basingstoke. Oakley was formed with the village of Deane as a civil parish but since the 2011 Census, they are both now just known as Oakley. The earliest recording of Oakley is in the Domesday Book of 1086. There are two districts that divide Oakley; East Oakley and Church Oakley.
The schools of Oakley are rated very highly, which makes the village a popular place for new families to move to. Both Oakley CE Junior School and Oakley Infant school have achieved ‘outstanding’ ratings in past OFSTED inspections. The pupils of Oakley CE Junior School won a BBC competition and were selected to create a Doctor Who mini-adventure, which wall titled ‘Death is the Only Answer’.
There is a small Methodist church in Oakley and until recently an ancient Anglican church named St Leonard’s. Sadly St Leonard’s was recently demolished due to safety reasons and is now a garden of remembrance with a war memorial positioned on the site. There is a community centre in the building opposite where the church was as well as a schoolhouse for nursery pupils.
There are a few shops and amenities in Oakley village, including independent businesses such as a cake shop, hairdressers, coffee shop and butchers, as well as chain shops such as Co-Op. In the centre of the village is a scenic duck pond which is surrounded by thatched-roof properties which provides a picturesque and ‘villagey’ view. For pub lovers, the three watering holes in Oakley are The Barley Mow, The Fox and The Beach Arms. To the west of Oakley Village is Oakley Hall, a Georgian Manor House from the 18th century that is now a hotel that is used for special occasions and event hire.
